Will Miami Open 2020 be canceled in response to Coronavirus?

Miami, March 5, 2020. By JAVIER BENAVIDES, Sports Editor.

As the coronavirus continues to spread, entertainment industry players and organizers are making major changes to what was originally going to be a busy slate of premieres, conventions, and events in spring 2020.

On Wednesday alone: Neflix and Apple both pulled out of the 2020 SXSW festival; Sony closed three of its European offices for the rest of the week; MGM postponed the release of “James Bond: No Time to Die”; and the 2020 Ultra Music Festival in Miami was canceled.

In addition, talent agency powerhouse CAA has restricted employee travel to “business-critical” only for at least the next two weeks, and the MipTV conference, originally scheduled for March 30-April 2, has been canceled.

Miami not only hosts the crazy Ultra Music Festival, but the Miami Open is also set to start in about two weeks (March 23-April 5). The ATP Masters 1000 tennis tournament set 15 session attendance records over its two weeks in 2019, led by Session 9 on Saturday, March 23, which had 32,831 people show up. The previous single-session record before 2019 was 18,910 in 2007.

The overall tournament attendance was 388,734, topping the previous record of 326,131 in 2012.

The tournament participants and fans are coming with their teams from countries all over the world, even from those marked with a red flag like China, Japon, South Corea, and Italy.

Cambio Hispano talked to the tournament organizers about special precautions and restrictions and this is all they said about the critical moment, “Our top priority is the health and safety of our fans, players and staff. We are proceeding with our preparations for the 2020 Miami Open while monitoring the situation closely in partnership with local, state and federal health officials, as well as the ATP and WTA tours. We are also working with our partner Baptist Health and following CDC guidelines closely to ensure a safe environment for everyone involved in the tournament.” A tournament spokesperson said.

The future of the «Calle Ocho Festival» is also on hold and city commissioners will discuss its possible cancelation on Thursday.
