What causes menopausal dryness?

Menopausal dryness occurs when the body produces inadequate levels of estrogen hormone. Major symptom is thinning of the vaginal lining. This is also called vaginal atrophy in medical terms. This is usually accompanied with a burning sensation or pain during urination and spotting after an intercourse.

Though mostly observed in women nearing menopausal age, this problem can affect them much earlier in life. Generally, breast feeding mothers, women on medication for depression, birth control or blood pressure are subjected to such hormonal imbalances.

Women who smoke excessively, suffer from breast cancer, are undergoing chemotherapy or have had surgical removal of their ovaries (hysterectomy), too, are susceptible to this condition.

What are the symptoms of dryness due to menopause?

Symptoms of menopausal and vaginal dryness can be spotted early on. Watch for these signs-

  • Burning, itching or a painful sensation inside the vagina or around the vulva. May or may not be accompanied with soreness
  • Pain experienced during intercourse, may include light bleeding
  • Mild discharge from the vagina, or frequent vaginal infections
